Extreme weather events, like winter storms and hurricanes, can bring unexpected interruptions to teaching and learning. By planning ahead, you can minimize disruptions, maintain course momentum, and ensure your students stay on track. Here are four suggestions to keep your course running smoothly, no matter the forecast.
1. Communicate Your Contingency Plan
Let your students know how procedures might change during interruptions to regularly scheduled programming. Specify how you'll communicate updates in your syllabus – whether via iCollege announcements, emails, the iCollege Calendar, or other channels – and clarify any adjustments to assignments or schedules.
2. Utilize iCollege for Course Materials
Ensure all essential course materials are available on iCollege. Upload lecture notes, readings, and other resources so students can access them remotely. This preparation allows learning to continue seamlessly, even if in-person classes are canceled. Be sure to check out our post on ensuring your course materials are accessible to all students.
3. Get to Know Webex
Get comfortable with Webex. Conduct a test session to ensure both you and your students can navigate the technology effectively, facilitating a smooth transition to synchronous online instruction, if necessary.
4. Embrace Flexible Deadlines and Assessments
Anticipate potential disruptions by setting flexible deadlines for assignments and exams. Consider using iCollege Quizzes so that students can complete assessments remotely.
