You know what they say… other than death, there are no greater certainties in life than taxes and textbook adoption. Okay, maybe no one says that, but we suspect many of us harbor similar feelings about both. Paying taxes might feel burdensome, tedious, intrusive, or wasteful. It might even feel like you’re under surveillance—not great. Yet ideally, taxes ensure we're all contributing fairly to public benefits and, if the stars align, filing taxes can even put money back in your pocket.
Similarly, textbook adoption deadlines might seem tedious or intrusive… another administrative hurdle. However, timely adoption supports affordability, accessibility, and student success. When faculty meet textbook adoption deadlines, students have a clearer understanding of what’s expected and have more time get ready for day one. Just as importantly, because students can compare costs and the university bookstore has more time to source used texts and rentals, we can help our students have more money for other things… like rent, and food, and fun.
So, while adopting textbooks on time might feel like paying taxes—obligatory and kind of annoying—remember that, ideally, both ultimately contribute to well-functioning, equitable systems. This year, Tax Day is April 15, and our Fall 2025 textbook adoption day is April 14. Suspiciously close, no? Regardless, let’s all commit to jumping through some hoops for the greater good.
To find out more, check out this how-to guide or our earlier blog post on textbook adoption. Then, if you haven’t already adopted your textbook for Summer 2025 or Fall 2025, let’s make it happen.
NOTE: The textbook adoption process is important, even if you don’t require any materials or use open educational resources (OER).
