High Impact Practices in Online Education
Facilitator: Katy Crowther, Associate Director of Teaching Effectiveness, CETLOE ([email protected])
We know the value of implementing High Impact Practices (HIPs) into our courses, but how does it work in the online environment? This faculty book club will develop concrete strategies to implement HIPs in your courses as we read and discuss High-Impact Practices in Online Education.
This book offers a comprehensive guide to implementing HIPs in distance education, addressing how these practices can be tailored to meet the unique needs of online learners. With contributions from various disciplines, it delves into each of the eleven HIPs and discusses how they can be effectively adapted for online settings. Each chapter gives concrete examples and practical suggestions to transition HIPs into the digital classroom, backed by the latest research, and the book as a whole explores methods to boost student engagement, retention, and success in online courses.
Whether you're new to HIPs or looking to refine your approach, this book club offers a collaborative space to learn strategies you can employ to directly impact student success.
First meeting: Friday, Sept. 13, 1 - 2 p.m. online via Webex (Link provided upon registration)

The Ignorant Schoolmaster: Five Lessons in Intellectual Emancipation
Facilitator: Justin Lonsbury, Director of Course and Program Design, CETLOE ([email protected])
The Ignorant Schoolmaster: Five Lessons in Intellectual Emancipation, by Jacques Rancière, is a mind-bending exploration of education, equality, and intellectual emancipation. Through the story of Joseph Jacotot, a French teacher and educational philosopher in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Rancière challenges our basic assumptions about learning and teaching, inviting us to reconsider power dynamics on display in typical faculty-student relationships.
In our book club, we'll explore Rancière's radical proposition: that an educator can teach what they don’t know, and that all people possess equal intelligence. Along the way, we'll wrestle with questions such as:
-
- How might an "explicative order" in education reinforce intellectual inequality?
- What does it mean to truly emancipate our students intellectually?
- How can we foster an environment of intellectual equality in our classrooms?
- What are the implications of Jacotot's method for our own teaching practices?
We hope that you’ll join us for the ride, as we consider how these ideas might transform our understanding of education and our roles as educators.
First Meeting: Friday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. Meetings will be conducted online via Webex.
Open to all GSU faculty
