FACULTY TEACHING & LEARNING COMMUNITIES
Joining a CETLOE Faculty Teaching & Learning Community (TaLC) provides an opportunity for you to develop your teaching practices and work with a group of faculty from across the university on teaching and learning initiatives. Although there are a few exceptions, TaLCs typically meet once a month from September through April. In the past, groups have worked together to develop scholarly articles and conference presentations on data they have collected, designed support materials for other faculty, and developed recommendations for the university community on pressing issues. Consider taking part in one of these groups to develop your own teaching and support the university community.
Faculty TaLCs 2024-2025
*NOTE: In Spring 2025 we will be running three TaLCs with a focus on a specific High-Impact Practice (HIPs). These will be offered as part of a larger HIPs initiative; more details will be available soon.
- AI in Teaching and Learning for Beginners
- Atlanta-Based Learning (Special Focus on HIPs TaLC)
- Collaborative Assignments and Projects (Special Focus on HIPs TaLC)
- Integrating Core IMPACTS & Skills Briefcase into Your Courses
- Virtual Exchange Academy
- Writing is HIP!: Transforming your Course into a Writing-Intensive Course. (Special Focus on HIPs TaLC)
AI in Teaching and Learning for Beginners
Curious about AI? Interested in AI pedagogy? If so, please join our AI in Teaching and Learning TaLC. In Spring 2025, our TaLC will be reading the book Teaching with AI and using it to inform our discussions and help us build AI-based assignments. The book is available in our GSU library's digital collection and as an audio book (did you know we had those too?). We will meet monthly on a day and time to be determined.
Atlanta-Based Learning (Special Focus on HIPs TaLC)
Location-based education encourages active learning and places theoretical concepts in real-world contexts. When students already have knowledge that they can build upon, they are more likely to understand and retain complex ideas. This TaLC will explore pedagogical approaches using Metro Atlanta in our teaching, including walking tours around GSU’s campuses, connecting to local partners, location-based projects and assignments, and using Atlanta to encourage interdisciplinary thinking.
Collaborative Assignments and Projects (Special Focus on HIPs TaLC)
Students may not love "group-work," but we know that there are proven benefits to having students work collaboratively during all stages of the learning process. This TaLC will focus on strategies to design and implement successful collaborative assignments and projects, and participants will be encouraged to develop options for use in their courses. Themes to be covered will include setting up groups, structure and expectations, scaffolding and milestones, communication strategies, navigating conflict, and measures of evaluation. Faculty leading courses of all sizes, levels, and modalities are invited to participate.
Integrating Core IMPACTS & Skills Briefcase into Your Courses
Core IMPACTS introduces innovative strategies to help students develop career-ready skills. However, incorporating these initiatives can feel overwhelming amidst busy schedules. This workshop will provide Georgia State faculty with dedicated time and support to integrate impactful teaching strategies into their courses.
Through collaborative working groups, you will exchange resources and ideas on assignments, activities, and teaching strategies that align with specific career competencies. These sessions provide a supportive space to develop or refine assignments that enhance your students’ learning experiences. Also, you will explore Skills Briefcase, a practical tool designed to seamlessly link your teaching to career-readiness goals. Join us to make your courses more meaningful and prepare students for success in today’s workforce. We will meet monthly on a day and time that is to be determined.
Virtual Exchange Academy
Virtual Exchange is a high impact teaching method that will globalize your curriculum. As a member of this faculty TaLC, you will learn to use virtual exchange to facilitate the development of your students’ collaborative, global, and cross-cultural competencies. You will also receive guidance and assistance in the development of your virtual exchange program as well as assistance in finding a global partner. You will benefit from the experience of seasoned virtual exchange practitioners and eventually have the opportunity to mentor your colleagues. Please contact Dr. David Yenerall ([email protected]) if you have any questions about our Virtual Exchange Academy.
Writing is HIP!: Transforming your Course into a Writing-Intensive Course. (Special Focus on HIPs TaLC)
High Impact teaching Practices or HIPs are teaching and learning practices that research has shown to promote student success and encourage persistence and retention (you can see the full list here: https://www.aacu.org/trending-topics/high-impact). In this TaLC, we will discuss the benefits of using writing to promote deeper and more lasting learning, and participants will explore ways to integrate writing into some of their course assignments.
