Campus Maps
Georgia State University has several campuses spread across metro-Atlanta. The following link offers a map for the main campus, in downtown Atlanta and each of the GSU Perimeter College campuses: Campus Map.
PTI New Hire
Human Resources handles all hiring. You will receive an email from Equifax with an electronic hiring packet you should fill out. If you do not receive an email from Equifax, contact your department.
Campus ID and Email Address
Upon completing your HR paperwork, the university will issue you with an email address and CampusID. Before you use your CampusID for the first time, you must activate it. Once you have activated your CampusID, you can set up a password and you will have access to all of GSU’s programs, including email, iCollege, GoSolar, and PAWS.
Panther Card
All GSU faculty, staff, and students must have a Panther Card to use the library on the Downtown campus. You will not be allowed to enter the library on the downtown campus without a card. You can receive a Panther Card through Auxiliary Services. Your panther number, which is given to you by the HR office upon completion of your hiring forms, will be printed on the bottom of the Panther Card. If you are working on one of the GSU Perimeter College campuses, contact the Panther Card office to find the location on your campus.
Parking and Permits
All faculty parking on the downtown campus is paid parking. Faculty receive a discounted parking rate with a parking permit. Once you have your panther number and faculty ID, you can request a parking permit. For more information on the process at the downtown campus, visit the parking office website. For information on parking at the GSU Perimeter College Campuses, visit the Perimeter College website.
Emergencies at GSU
If you have an emergency situation in your classroom, you can dial 911 or 3X3333. If you need information on what to do during an emergency, on how to sign up for email and text alerts, on campus escorts or anything else related to campus safety, you can visit the campus safety website.
START TEACHING >>
Class Schedule
Our class schedule offers information on all courses taught at GSU on all campuses. If you need your course information, including enrollment, location, computer reference number (CRN), and section, you can find that information on our class schedule. Just select the semester and basic information for your course, and you will see everything you need in the class schedule.
Classroom Keys
GSU classrooms should be locked after class. Before teaching, you will need to get a copy of your classroom key. During the first week of classes, representatives from key control are typically available in to pass out keys to faculty. In order to get a key, you will need to have your Panther Card or ID number and the location of your classroom. All keys must be returned when you leave GSU or you will be charged a $15 fine per key. Check with your department for specifics regarding keys for your classroom as many have their own policies.
Sample Syllabus from Department and Syllabus Requirements
As soon as you receive your class, be sure to contact your department and ask for a sample syllabus, if they haven’t already given you one. A sample syllabus will help you to understand what the department prioritizes. It will provide you with any learning outcomes, departmental requirements, and an idea of pacing. You may also want to look over CETLOE’s Website Constructing a Syllabus information on syllabus design.
FERPA
FERPA stands for Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. This act ensures that students have access to their records AND protects students’ academic information. Below you will find several links to detailed information regarding FERPA, but here are some simple, and fairly intuitive, rules to remember:
- Students have a right to know their individual grades. If they request their grades, you must provide them with their grades.
- Keep student grades private. Do not post grades, share grades aloud in class, pass around graded assignments, or engage in any other activities that would allow students’ personal information to become public.
- Use the university email system for all correspondences with students.
- Do not share any educational records with parents, family members or friends unless the student has submitted a consent to release of educational records to third parties to the Registrar’s office on the requestor’s behalf. Parents no longer have access to student records once a student enrolls in college or turns 18.
For a full description of your students’ rights under FERPA, check out the following link:

Title IX
Title IX protects students, faculty, and staff from discrimination on the basis of sex. Sexual misconduct, including sexual harassment and sexual violence, is considered discrimination and is a violation of Title IX. All GSU employees are required to complete HAVEN training to become familiar with Title IX and your responsibilities to report sexual misconduct. You must have a GSU login and password before you can complete this training.
Student Roll, Roll Verification, and Early Alert
To obtain a list of your students, you must sign in to GoSolar using your CampusID and password. If you do not have a CampusID or password by the time the semester begins, you may contact your department for a list of students enrolled in your class.
Approximately 2 weeks into the semester, you will be asked to “Verify Your Roll” for financial aid purposes. The university will ask you to certify that all students have attended your class at least once during that time period. If you have a student who has never attended, you can make note of it during the roll verification process.
Approximately 3 weeks into the semester, you may receive an Early Alert Notice. Early Alert is designed to notify student support services if a student in a designated group is struggling with a course. Designated groups include students in their first 45 hours and scholarship students as well as other students who might be struggling to stay on track. These early alerts are vital to ensuring that students receive the support they need in a timely manner, so please be sure to respond to them as soon as possible.
Library Resources
The GSU library has created a page for all faculty which you may find particularly useful as you prepare for the semester. On their site, you’ll find instructions for using the resources and contact information for individual librarian support. Our libraries can be a bit overwhelming for new students and new faculty, so, if possible, we highly recommend you visit the Library website to see what is available before you begin developing your assignments for the semester.
Resources for Your Students
Academic Coaching: The Office of Student Success offers a variety of resources to help students progress toward their degrees. One resource that has shown to be particularly helpful is Academic Coaching. All students can visit the Academic Coaching Office for help, but this office is designed especially to meet the needs of students within their first 45 credit hours. For more information on Academic Coaching, you and your students can visit the Academic Coaching website.
Tutoring Centers: GSU has a variety of tutoring centers available to support students. Be sure to ask your department head what tutoring opportunities your department offers for its students. Here are links to a few of the larger tutoring centers on campus:

iCollege Setup
iCollege is Georgia State University’s digital learning environment. Many faculty use iCollege to distribute syllabi, PowerPoints, assignments, tests, and grades, among other things. If you feel comfortable learning new technology, iCollege is very intuitive and can be a wonderful tool for interacting with students. In fact, it’s so widely used that many students expect to see it in their classes. CETLOE offers a wide variety of support resources including workshops, one-on-one consultations, and videos for those new to iCollege.
Teaching and Learning Workshops
The Center for Excellence Teaching, Learning and Online Education offers a variety of workshops on advanced pedagogical techniques and learning technologies for faculty throughout the semester. To view CETLOE offerings and register for workshops, visit the CETLOE workshops and events calendar.
PTI Faculty Development Day
Each August CETLOE offers a symposium for GSU Part-Time Instructors. The day-long symposium is held on a Saturday before the semester begins. All PTIs are welcome to attend, and we especially encourage new PTIs to take part.
Our goals for the symposium are:
Goal 1: Enhance teaching practices at GSU
Goal 2: Promote desired student behaviors
Goal 3: Increasing awareness of best-practices at GSU
Goal 4: Foster a sense of community
At the GSU Part-Time Instructor Symposium, we offer pedagogical development workshops for instructors who are new to teaching and for veteran teachers. Previous workshops have included discussions on providing feedback, classroom management, active learning strategies, GSU technology and more.
PTI Faculty Development Day as well as a registration link will be posted under the CETLOE Events tab on this page as soon as it becomes available.
ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE >>
Teaching and Learning Communities
Each fall, the Center for Excellence starts Teaching and Learning Communities (TaLC). These communities provide a space for faculty members to explore an idea related to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning or develop an initiative that they can share with colleagues in their home departments. Check out our current TaLCs and consider signing up for the PTI TaLC this fall.
Certificate of Mastery in Online Teaching
PTIs can earn a Mastering Online Teaching Badge by participating in the Mastering Online Teaching Course. Each module is designed to help faculty members develop the tools they will need to teach fully-online courses effectively. PTIs can complete all modules in the series to earn badge for their CV.
Part-Time Instructor Pedagogy Awards
Every spring, the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Online Education presents a Part-Time Instructor Pedagogy Award. PTIs are nominated by their departments and nominations are judged on their demonstration of the PTI’s teaching effectiveness, innovation, and engagement. Nominations are typically due on or around March 1 and awards are announced April 1. Learn more about the PTI Pedagogy Awards.
