TURNITIN ORIGINALITY CHECKER
What is Turnitin Originality Checker?
Turnitin is a widely used plagiarism detection tool designed to ensure academic integrity and maintain the authenticity of written work. It compares submitted documents, such as essays, reports or research papers, against an extensive database of existing texts, including academic papers, articles, websites and student submissions from various institutions.
Turnitin's originality checker employs algorithms to identify similarities between the submitted work and the database content, highlighting potential instances of plagiarism or improper citation. The tool generates an "originality report" that provides a detailed breakdown of matching text and corresponding sources, indicating the percentage of similarity, and pinpointing the specific passages that might require further scrutiny.

FAQs
The Turnitin Similarity Report identifies areas of potential plagiarism across multiple factors and provides instructors with indications of portions of the students work that merit further scrutiny. It flags and highlights areas of test that have evidence of hidden characters and/or text replacement. The Match Overview provides a list of sources that match the student writing and makes them available to review. Instructors can use filters and settings to exclude citations, quotes or bibliographic information.
It is important to view reports completely for each student. A high percentage originality report could be the result of poor citation and quotations. Use these as teachable moments for proper documentation.
Turnitin enabled assignments can be copied between courses. The instructor will be prompted to re-enable Turnitin’s default settings when the visit the assignments page in iCollege.
Yes, is the Turnitin Settings, you can choose to not have assignments be added to the repository. This blocks students’ multiple drafts from being flag as students improve their work.
Assignments can be set to display the reports to students. Student at any time can access Turnitin through the student resources tab on their iCollege homepage.
Turnitin claims a high rate of detection accuracy with few false positives, however, the percentage on the AI writing indicator should not be used as the sole basis for action or a definitive grading measure by instructors. Turnitin provides data based on word probability for the instructors to make informed decisions based on their professional judgement and institutional guidance.
